Will Turner - Brought up in England by his mother, he decided to go hunting for his father when she died when he was just 8 years old. He believes his father was a respectable merchant who obeyed the law and is none the less surprised to learn that his father was a pirate known by all as Bootstrap Bill, scaly wag and personal friend of Captain Jack Sparrow. He was murdered by Barbossa when he expressed discomfort at their mutiny on the Black Pearl and doomed them forever by sending a one of the Aztec Gold pieces to his only son. Will was rescued by the young Elizabeth Swan who was on board a ship with her father when his merchant vessel either blew up or was set upon by pirates. The governor then obtained Will a Blacksmith's apprenticeship where by Will really does all of the work as his master is drunk all the time. 

An adept swords smith, Will spends 3 hours a day practising  "so that when I meet a pirate, I can kill it!" He is secretly in love with Elizabeth and when he learns of her capture, he sets out with the unruly pirate Jack Sparrow in order to go and rescue her. 

Will is played by the delightful Orlando Bloom, known for his role as Legolas in Lord of the Rings. He collects necklaces for all over the place. "I now have all these great skills that are completely useless in everyday life, but throw me back a few hundred years and I'd be able to take care of myself really well."

Jack: This girl, how far are you willing to go to save her?
Will : I’d die for her.

Will : How did Jack get off the island?
Gibbs : Well, I’ll tell you. He waded out into the shallows and there he waited three days and three nights till all manner of sea creature came and acclimated to his presence. And on the fourth morning he roped himself a couple of sea turtles, harnessed them together and made a raft. 
Will : He roped a couple of sea turtles?
Gibbs : Aye, sea turtles.
Will : What did he use for rope?

Jack : [to Will ] Don’t do anything stupid.
Will : You can’t…I can. [points gun at himself]
Jack : Like that.

Will : On my word do as I say or I’ll pull this trigger and be lost to Davy Jones’ Locker.

Governor Swann : On our return to Port Royal , I granted you clemency and this is how you thank me? By throwing in your lot with him? He’s a pirate!
Will : And a good man. [Jack points to himself proudly] If all I have achieved here is that the hangman will earn two pairs of boots instead of one, so be it. At least my conscience will be clear.

Norrington: You forget your place, Turner.
Will : It’s right here, between you and Jack .
